April Showers bring May Flowers...

You know, they say that "April Showers Bring May Flowers", but in our case in the small, southern Indiana town where we reside, I wonder if *snow* showers mean anything? We all thought that Spring time was right around the corner, but now it's feeling more and more like late Fall! Ugh! Talk about disappointing...

Jeff & I have gotten some starts from my mom's house and have planted them already. Luckily, the plants themselves are perennials, and are very hardy! Otherwise we would be in quite a bit of trouble. :) We've planted Iris', Japanese Iris', Bearded Iris', Tiger Lily's & Hostas. This weekend, April 10th, we were planning on bringing in some vegetable plants for our garden.

In our quest to be more self-sufficient, we've made some difficult decisions. One of those tougher decisions has been deciding to get rid of our two basset hounds. Jeff has had his male basset since 2004, but he will be going to my parents to live. Our female basset was (unwillingly on my part) acquired in mid-2005, and she was primarily around for companionship with Skeeter (male)~ and we thought we'd try our hand at breeding. Cricket (the female) has been a bit harder to work with, although since she is outside we've not had to deal with her destructive behavior much. The difficulty is definitely in finding people to take a grown, adult basset. She has been bred a few times, so that could be an issue for some. However, we're determined to do something to become more self-reliant! Sacrifices must be made, and in this case, we cannot afford to keep our dogs and add chickens to the mess. (We've decided to start small and work our way up as far as animals are concerned.) The cost to feed both dogs on top of the cost of feed for chickens would be a bit much for our budget currently. We realize that everything will work out exactly like it's supposed to...it's just a matter of actually GETTING there!!
